The Fastest Guide on the Internet to Setting up Your Coolidor

In a previous installment of the Fastest Guide to Storage, we covered the Tupperdor. But what happens when you want to store boxes of cigars that don’t fit in a Tupperware? Enter the Coolidor. It is a solution that is as easy to set up as a Tupperdor, holds humidity just as well, and is widely used by box buyers and agers. The Coolidor is also preferred because its insulation reduces fluctuations in temperature.

Step 1: Purchase The Equipment

  1. Cooler:  I have the 100 Qt Igloo Marine Ultra Cooler, but you can purchase any cooler. I’ve seen some people buy a Yeti cooler for $300+, but that’s out of my budget, so I opted for the $88 Igloo, and it works just fine. This decision is more a matter of style preference and budget. Here is what my Coolidor looks like:

  1. Humidification: Bovedas size 67g, 62% RH, or if you want fewer, purchase the size 320s.
  2. Monitoring: Govee thermometer and hygrometer. Any hygrometer and thermometer combo would work fine but ensure they are calibrated. I enjoy seeing the temperature and humidity when I lift the Coolidor’s lid, so I opted for this model.

Step 2: Put it together

  1. Wash and dry your cooler.
  2. Put in the Boveda packs.
  3. Put in your calibrated hygrometer and thermometer.
  4. Put in your boxes.

It’s that easy. A benefit of Coolidors or Tupperdors is you don’t have to worry about seasoning the cedar, and they don’t leak. The Bovedas handle it for you. Many people don’t even use a hygrometer and trust the Bovedas.

Questions

How many boxes can fit in a 100 Qt Coolidor?

This question is complicated since boxes come in different sizes and shapes. However, the general estimates are that 20-25 boxes could fit in a 100 Qt Coolidor. You can see some examples people give on this Cigar Forums thread.

Why do you suggest 62% Boveda packs?

Like the Tupperdore, humidity runs about 2-3% higher than listed in a sealed environment. 58% Boveda packs are also a reasonable choice.

If you store the cigars for years, a lower humidity is often preferred.

Where should I keep the Coolidor?

A basement is usually preferred because it is cooler, has fewer temperature fluctuations throughout the year, and has less direct sunlight. If you don’t have a basement, find somewhere dark and cooler. A closet works for many.
